If you grew up in the Caribbean, then you might be familiar with the term ‘ginger tea heals everything’. The spice root is well-known for its magical healing powers and can be found as a staple ingredient in most Caribbean kitchens.
Ginger is a herbaceous perennial, which grows annual stems, bearing narrow green leaves and yellow flowers, while the root is grown in the dirt.
Widely-known as a remedy for nausea, indigestion, flu like symptoms and travel sickness, it is also a powerful anti-inflammatory herb. It is also commonly used as a treatment for joint problems, arthritis, headaches, coughs and a long list of other ailments.
In the Caribbean, the locals are known for brewing a batch of ginger tea daily. But it is not only used as a healing spice, ginger is a key ingredient of Trini-Chinese and Guyanese-Chinese cuisines. It is perfect for creating refreshing cocktails, desserts and even pairing with fresh, seafood dishes.
Ginger can be found in most local markets and groceries in both the root form and a powdered form.
Here are three of my unique and delicious recipes, starring the ‘magical healer’ ginger.
